democracy, Leadership, participation and impact
From 3–5 September 2025, Villa Fabris in Thiene, Italy once again became the meeting point for changemakers, policymakers, researchers, and practitioners from all over Europe and beyond. With the patronage of the European Committee of the Regions, the Province of Vicenza, and the Municipality of Thiene, and with the generous support of the Veneto Region, ALDA hosted the second edition of its International School.
This year’s theme, “Resilient Communities: Strengthening Local Democracy in Times of Change” reflected the urgent need to reinforce democratic systems in the face of today’s complex global challenges. Over three days, participants explored together how trust in institutions can be rebuilt, how digital tools and artificial intelligence can serve participatory governance, and how ethical and sustainable democratic systems can be imagined and put into practice.
The International School combined theoretical inputs, practical exercises, and cultural exchanges, offering participants not only new knowledge but also the opportunity to test tools, debate openly, and build lasting connections.
With this foundation, ALDA will return in 2026 with an even more ambitious programme, new thematic tracks and stronger international partnerships. Stay tuned for the announcement of the theme and dates in the coming months.
HIGHLIGHTS FROM INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL 2025:
ABOUT the INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL 2025
DAY ONE – Opening and Democratic Resilience
The first day opened with an Institutional Welcome that set the tone of the School, framing democracy as a shared responsibility requiring resilience, dialogue, citizen engagement, and international cooperation.
The morning continued with a keynote panel on populism and democracy under pressure, featuring Prof. Paolo Graziano (University of Padua) and Prof. Dino Piovan, who analysed how rising populism and political polarisation are reshaping democratic life in Europe and putting increasing pressure on institutions.
This was followed by an interactive session on populism, polarisation, and institutional trust, with contributions from Patrick Molinoz (former President of the CIVEX Commission of the European Committee of the Regions and Vice-President of the Burgundy–Franche-Comté Region), Nataša Vučković (President of ALDA and the Center for Democracy Foundation), and Cana Tülüş Türk (Senior Specialist at the Istanbul Policy Center). The discussion highlighted the erosion of institutional trust while offering concrete reflections on rebuilding it through inclusive and transparent governance.
In the afternoon, the focus shifted from analysis to practice through participatory World Café discussions facilitated by Avventura Urbana, where participants explored participatory decision-making and the active role of communities in strengthening democracy.
The day concluded with a guided visit of Thiene, allowing participants to discover the city’s cultural heritage and to deepen personal connections in a more informal setting.
